Local Norcross Preservation Commission Begins Work

When the city council passed a local preservation ordinance in August and appointed a Preservation Commission, Norcross joined 120 Georgia cities appointing citizen boards tasked with preserving, protecting, and reusing historic resources. Of that number, 69 have achieved Certified City status, entitling them to more grant opportunities.

Residents serving on the commission are Anne Webb, chair, Linda Leese, Pierre Levy, Catherine Cash, and Chuck Cimarik.

Besides overseeing a survey of remaining historic properties within The National Registry district, commission members plan a community education meeting and will recommend local district boundaries to the city council. Members attend training workshops and serve as a resource to assist citizens in rehabbing and reusing historic property as well as encouraging compatible new construction within the historic district.

Research and preservation of historic city cemeteries is another project in the works. The Preservation Commission will share historic restoration information with the DDA's Design Committee. Besides preserving historic assets and enhancing quality of life, these citizen groups work to promote Norcross as a historic tourism destination.
